The smart home market is flooded with devices. How can a product’s potential consumers — or companies evaluating whether to invest in consumer IoT — differentiate between marketing hype versus actual quality and value?

With the winners of the 2021 Best of the Smart Home Awards announced today, consumers and companies alike have a firmer guidepost for success.

Stacey Higginbotham, Awards Judge

“The smart home market is incredibly competitive today. It was an honor to dive deeper into these innovative products and recognize the ones that go above and beyond to delight users and deliver value.”

Organizations from across the globe submitted their innovative products for consideration in the Best of the Smart Home Awards. Nominations were judged by industry experts including Stacey Higginbotham, founder of Stacey on IoTRob Tiffany, VP of IoT Strategy at Ericsson, and Bill Brock, CTO at Very.

2021 Best of the Smart Home Award Winners

Best Physical UX

Arlo Technologies, Inc., Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wire-Free

This award recognizes the device with the most innovative and useful hardware. Judges assessed industrial hardware design for both visual appeal and in relation to the device’s purpose, the product’s ease of use, and the quality of construction.

The Arlo Video Doorbell has a simple, elegant design that should work with most any home decor. It’s easy to install and doesn’t require any wiring or integration with your existing doorbell.”

Rob Tiffany

Best Mobile UX

Signify, Philips Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip

This award is reserved for the smart home solution with the most intuitive and seamless mobile app experience. Judges analyzed app design & functionality, connectivity, and how the app helps users accomplish their goals.

I like how the Hue app gives you control functions front-and-center and then lets you drill down to individual lights. Managing dozens of bulbs with a lot of potential features could be overwhelming.”

Best Use of Machine Learning

Whisker Labs, Inc., Ting

This award honors the product that best uses machine learning to solve a problem, with measurable results. Judges evaluated how data is collected and analyzed within the solution and the outcomes this produces for target users.

Ting is solving a problem that I actively worry about.”
